EST or EDT, GMT or BST? Daylight saving explained
EST (UTC−5) is the winter name and EDT (UTC−4) the summer name. Most people write “EST” all year and mean whatever the clocks say in New York, so MeetETA reads EST as local Eastern time on the date you pick, and says so when that date is on EDT.
GMT (UTC+0) is UK winter time; from late March to late October the UK is on BST (UTC+1). People who say “GMT” for a London meeting usually mean UK time, so this page uses London time. If you mean GMT as a fixed UTC+0 all year, it is the same as UTC (and that is how the type-a-time box reads the word “GMT”; type “London” for UK time).
Right now New York is on EDT, UTC−4 and London is on BST, UTC+1 (the clocks at the top of the page always show the live values).
How the gap changes during the year
London is 5 hours ahead of New York for most of the year. For a few weeks it is 4 h, because the two sides change their clocks on different dates.
| Date | What changes | Gap after |
|---|---|---|
| Sun 8 Mar 2026 | New York moves clocks forward (EST → EDT) | 4 h ahead |
| Sun 29 Mar 2026 | London moves clocks forward (GMT → BST) | 5 h ahead |
| Sun 25 Oct 2026next | London moves clocks back (BST → GMT) | 4 h ahead |
| Sun 1 Nov 2026 | New York moves clocks back (EDT → EST) | 5 h ahead |
| Sun 14 Mar 2027 | New York moves clocks forward (EST → EDT) | 4 h ahead |
| Sun 28 Mar 2027 | London moves clocks forward (GMT → BST) | 5 h ahead |
| Sun 31 Oct 2027 | London moves clocks back (BST → GMT) | 4 h ahead |
| Sun 7 Nov 2027 | New York moves clocks back (EDT → EST) | 5 h ahead |
