EST or EDT? Daylight saving explained
EST (UTC−5) is the winter name and EDT (UTC−4) the summer name. Most people write “EST” all year and mean whatever the clocks say in New York, so MeetETA reads EST as local Eastern time on the date you pick, and says so when that date is on EDT.
UTC is the world’s reference time. It never changes for daylight saving; every other zone is described as an offset from it.
Right now New York is on EDT, UTC−4 and UTC is on UTC, UTC+0 (the clocks at the top of the page always show the live values).
How the gap changes during the year
UTC is 4 hours ahead of New York while New York is on EDT, and 5 hours ahead of New York while New York is on EST.
