EST or EDT? Daylight saving explained
UTC is the world’s reference time. It never changes for daylight saving; every other zone is described as an offset from it.
EST (UTC−5) is the winter name and EDT (UTC−4) the summer name. Most people write “EST” all year and mean whatever the clocks say in New York, so MeetETA reads EST as local Eastern time on the date you pick, and says so when that date is on EDT.
Right now UTC is on UTC, UTC+0 and New York is on EDT, UTC−4 (the clocks at the top of the page always show the live values).
How the gap changes during the year
New York is 5 hours behind UTC while New York is on EST, and 4 hours behind UTC while New York is on EDT.
| Date | What changes | Gap after |
|---|---|---|
| Sun 8 Mar 2026 | New York moves clocks forward (EST → EDT) | 4 h behind |
| Sun 1 Nov 2026next | New York moves clocks back (EDT → EST) | 5 h behind |
| Sun 14 Mar 2027 | New York moves clocks forward (EST → EDT) | 4 h behind |
| Sun 7 Nov 2027 | New York moves clocks back (EDT → EST) | 5 h behind |
